School incursions & excursions
Jake Cassar has run programs and done presentations in schools from pre schools to K - 12 for many years on the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle. Jake has been described as an encyclopedia of bush knowledge, earning this reputation by spending extended periods living from the land in remote areas. Jake is currently featured in the channel 7 series Goin Off Grid as a Survival Instructor and has also featured on ABC, History Channel, SBS, BBC and many other media platforms. Jake was described as the Aussie Bear Grills on the Today Show and the Bush Tucker Guru by the Daily Telegraph. Presentations Jake is available for presentations at your Pre school, Primary or High school for 1 - 2 hour talks on bush safety and survival with a focus on bush tucker and bush medicine. Jake can manage large groups of around 100 - 200 students at a time for eg, all of year 10, but generally works with smaller groups to keep the experience more hands on and interactive.
The larger presentations are more of an upbeat show than a hands on presentation. The presentation can be catered to your needs (and potentially what areas of the curriculum you'd like covered) and includes a fairly comprehensive presentation on locally foraged wild plants. All presentations are age appropriate, with special care taken to ensure the safety aspect is well covered. In a seated classroom or outdoor environment, Jake shows participants how to make string from native plants, the fundamentals of primitive fire making (either outdoors or just gets a bit of smoke to demonstrate), shows examples of edible and medicinal wild plants, includes important information relating to what the students should do if they found themselves lost in the bush, and much, much more. Jake's stories of survival will be sure to captivate and engage students of all backgrounds.
Jake's presentations are upbeat, entertaining and engaging, and are guaranteed to change the way the students look at the Aussie bush forever! Jake also offers excursions and camps for small groups to his beautiful property at Mangrove mountain or at the Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary at Calga where the students can learn about shelter building, tracking, useful plants and much more. Jake has worked closely with local Traditional Custodians for many years and has learned much of what he knows from local Elders.
"I have known Jake for around 20 years and have worked together with him on many occasions to care for Country and to educate people around bush safety, survival and edible and medicinal plants. While Jake is not Indigenous himself, he is very supportive of Traditional Custodians on the Central Coast and comes highly recommended as the "go to" for schools when is comes to teaching about safe, sustainable and respectful interactions with the land and all its inhabitants." Aunty Colleen Fuller - Darkinoong/Yuin Elder
"We ran a 3 day program with Jake at his Mangrove Mountain property with students from the Behavioural units of Wyong high and Brisbane Water Secondary College. While this was a big task to take on, Jake kept the students engaged for the entire time and was really able to give them an amazing fun and educational experience. Jake's down to earth approach, enthusiasm and riveting story telling, is sure to engage even the most easily distracted students. I would highly recommend Jake to any school." Maxine Okeefe - Wyong High
